An interview with Head Coach, Sime
How long have you been training in BJJ?
I’ve been training since 2008.
When did you get your Black Belt?
I received my Black Belt from Pedro Pacheco Fernandes of Tukaha in 2016.
Why do you like BJJ?
I like it because it’s technical as well as being an art form, where I can train at 100% energy as well. BJJ gives you tools beyond the mat such as discipline, tenacity, and the mental aptitude of learning how to take a loss as well as a win - all good tools for life. They’re also skills that often aren’t taught in school so it’s awesome to see our younger students thriving in this space. Clubs can offer you a team and camaraderie. Also everyone is equal on the mat.
Why did you choose to become a coach?
It’s a great way for me to give back to the sport and it’s really rewarding for me especially as I watch people progress through their journey in Jiu Jitsu.
If you could spend an hour on the mat with anyone, who would it be?
Rickson Gracie definitely and the mat would be in Brazil.
What advice would you give those that are just starting out?
My advice to beginners would be to try and master the basics before you try out any fancy techniques. Secondly if you’ve been thinking about trying it out, just do it. You won’t regret it.
